79 Religious Groups Oppose Nuclear Bomb Plant; Call for Nuclear Disarmament . . .

(WASHINGTON, DC) -- Seventy-nine Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim groups have joined together to reject administration plans to reactivate the U.S. nuclear weapons infrastructure and build new nuclear bomb plant facilities, Faithful Security announced today. In a formal letter to the Energy Department, religious organizations from across the country called instead for the United States to end new nuclear weapons production and commit to multilateral disarmament. >>

RELIABLE REPLACEMENT WARHEAD PROGRAM

During the Bush administration, we’ve seen a
lot of efforts to create new nuclear weapons.
First there was the “bunker buster”—a project
to create more “usable” nuclear weapons, which was abandoned due to a lack of public and Congressional support.

The latest incarnation is the Reliable
Replacement Warhead program— a
dangerous and unnecessary program that
would pour billions of dollars into the nuclear weapons complex.

Moving forward with this new nuclear weapons program at a time when we are urging countries like Iran to stop their pursuit of nuclear weapons sends a terrible signal. Plus, an independent commission testified that the production of new nuclear warheads is totally unnecessary--the warheads we've got have been proven to be reliable for one hundred years!

Instead of moving forward with a dangerous
new weapons program, we need to hasten dismantlement, put dollars into clean-up, and move closer to a world free of nuclear weapons.

The good news? Congress isn’t thrilled about
this new program. Last year both the House
and Senate zeroed out funding requests for the RRW, and this year, the House has done the
same thing. All eyes are on the Senate in 2008—will they stand their ground and delete
the funding? Let them know today why it’s so important that the Reliable Replacement
Warhead never sees the light of day.
